Spirit of Thanksgiving...

Ok..so, for the skeptic me, Thanksgiving just meant a long weekend which would give me an opportunity to relax throughout the weekend or meet my family and cashing with the Thanksgiving deals and nothing more. But I have just been thinking - actually, an American friend of mine invited me for a Thanksgiving dinner this week and since then, I've been wondering what I would say when asked to give thanks to something. And then I realised I am truly grateful to so many things that life had in store for me - obviously, I'm sure everyone is thankful for their family+friends+careers and so on. But I am also grateful for the following:

youtube.com for giving me a chance to catch up with shows, as I do not have a TV at home,
my camera, for helping me not go crazy with just work, work and more work,
the city buses at Lafayette, without which it would have been difficult for me to commute to my lab everyday,
the beautiful trees near the bus stop - I've learnt so many things the last few months from Nature, in general
The dirty Wabash river behind my apartment - I've observed it anyways and it just brings a sense of peace and quiet to a chaotic mind,
The Olive house/blue nile for their excellent veggie biryanis,
Villa pizza - for their excellent veggie pizza,
Freshen's smoothie - for their excellent smoothies and Pretzels with cheese sauce,
Pot Bellies - for their excellent sandwiches,
Lafayette Limo - for their good transport services from Indy to Purdue, without which life would be a tad difficult for me, coz I don't own a car,
the West Lafayette Public Library with its huge collection of movies/books,
Google - for providing me with so much info about everything,
ibnlive.com - for providing Indian news videos,
and so on and so forth...

Link to my childhood

Ok, so I am in the process of putting up a few stories and stuff my grandmothers used to tell me when I was a kid. This is kind of a tribute to them.

I don't know why I thought of this now, but I was sitting at my TA desk, completely bored, and all of a sudden, I had a flashback [:)] and I realised that they were so many things in life which were so precious and that it was worth it to keep a record of them. Hence these posts...Enjoy!!!!
I heard this story from my Ammamma when I was a kid. When she would narrate it, my mouth would start watering as she would start describing how the wife made the Dibba roti...I guess my passion for cooking started somewhere back then. Actually, I remember the very first time I started learning how to cook - I was around 8-9 years old and she made me sit down once and taught me how to cut spinach!! And she then praised me on my work...and that's when I started feeling confident about my cooking capabilities :) It's amazing how small things in one's childhood can lead to life-long passions and such.

The story of the greedy man and dibba roti


Once there was a poor brahmin who lived with his wife in a small village. They were having a hard time trying to make ends meet, so one day the wife told her husband, "Maybe you should look for work in a city, earn some money and then come back home". The husband agreed and started to prepare for his journey. In those days, they were no motor vehicles or cycles and the only mode of transport available was one's own legs. So, the wife felt sorry for her husband who would have to walk for days to reach the city. She loved him alot and so she set out to make a Dibba roti for him as a meal for him for all the days he would be travelling. (I forget what flour you are supposed to use - I think it might be minnapappu and a few other things). So she added some turmeric, some salt, some chilli powder, some dhania and jeera and some hing and mixed it in water. It was already smelling delicious by then. She then took some oil in a oan and added this paste to make a thick pancake/dosa kinda thing and fried it until it was done. She then wrapped this in a banana leaf and also put in some onion chutney, some coconut chutney, some sambar and some mango pickle as sides.

The brahmin set out and he walked for hours together, throughout the day and finally it was night and he was tired. He then found a huge tree to take rest under. But he did not know that behind the tree, there was a gang of dacoits who were also resting under the tree with their loot. As soon as the brahmin opened his dinner, a beautiful aroma spread everywhere and the dacoits wondered where this fragrance was coming from. They then found the brahmin, who was actually a little scared when he saw these people. But he then realised that they were just hungry, so he offered to share his food with them. The dacoits were delighted with this simple, yet delicious meal. They finshed all the food he ahd and in return they shared their booty with him as a token of gratitude for his generosity. The brahmin was happy and returned home immediately and told his wife about this good news and then she was happy too and soon their days of poverty got over.

Their neighbours were another brahmin couple who were surprised at the over-night prosperity of the couple. The neighbour's wife asked the brahmin's wife about the secret of their wealth and the ignorant brahmin's wife shared the whole story with her. The neighbour's wife then told her husband about it and overcome with greed, they decided to do the same thing. The neighbor's wife cooked dibba roti for her husband, but unfortunately, she was dreaming about all the riches that were soon to come and she added three times the amount of chilli powder. She then packed this dinner for her husband and he set out to the same forest and sat under the smae tree and waited for the dacoits to arrive. As soon as he saw them, he greeted them and offered to share his meal with them. The famished dacoits agreed only to have their tongues and throats burned by the spicy food. They then got very angry with the neighbour and beat him up properly before sending him home.

Moral of the story: 1.) Never be greedy
2.) What works for one person cannot work for another.

I cannot believe that I finally found this poem - most of the poems in this blog are the ones I studied in class 10. I am trying to compile them again - I rememver liking them a lot in school. I am sooooo happy!!!!!!

Akbar's bridge

Jelaludin Muhammed Akbar, Guardian of Mankind,
Moved his standards out of Delhi to Jaunpore of lower Hind,
Where a mosque was to be builded, and a lovelier ne'er was planned;
And Munim Khan, his Viceroy, slid the drawings 'neath his hand.

(High as Hope upsheered her out-works to the promised Heavens above.
Deep as Faith and dark as Judgment her unplumbed foundations dove.
Wide as Mercy, white as moonlight, stretched her forecourts to the dawn;
And Akbar gave commandment, "Let it rise as it is drawn.")

Then he wearied--the mood moving--of the men and things he ruled,
And he walked beside the Goomti while the flaming sunset cooled,
Simply, without mark or ensign--singly, without guard or guide,
Till he heard an angry woman screeching by the river-side.

'Twas the Widow of the Potter, a virago feared and known,
In haste to cross the ferry, but the ferry-man had gone.
So she cursed him and his office, and hearing Akbar's tread,
(She was very old and darkling) turned her wrath upon his head.

But he answered--being Akbar--"Suffer me to scull you o'er."
Called her "Mother," stowed her bundles, worked the clumsy scow from shore,
Till they grounded on a sand-bank, and the Widow loosed her mind;
And the stars stole out and chuckled at the Guardian of Mankind.

"Oh, most important of bunglers! Oh, my daughter's daughter's brood
Waiting hungry on the threshold; for I cannot bring their food,
Till a fool has learned his business at their virtuous grandam's cost,
And a greater fool, our Viceroy, trifles while her name is lost!

"Munim Khan, that Sire of Asses, sees me daily come and go
As it suits a drunken boatman, or this ox who cannot row.
Munim Khan, the Owl's Own Uncle--Munim Khan, the Capon's seed,
Must build a mosque to Allah when a bridge is all we need!

"Eighty years I eat oppression and extortion and delays--
Snake and crocodile and fever, flood and drouth, beset my ways.
But Munim Khan must tax us for his mosque whate'er befall;
Allah knowing (May He hear me!) that a bridge would save us all!"

While she stormed that other laboured and, when they touched the shore,
Laughing brought her on his shoulder to her hovel's very door.
But his mirth renewed her anger, for she thought he mocked the weak;
So she scored him with her talons, drawing blood on either cheek....

Jelaludin Muhammed Akbar, Guardian of Mankind,
Spoke with Munim Khan his Viceroy, ere the midnight stars declined--
Girt and sworded, robed and jewelled, but on either cheek appeared
Four shameless scratches running from the turban to the beard.

"Allah burn all Potter's Widows! Yet, since this same night was young,
One has shown me by pure token, there was a wisdom on her tongue.
Yes, I ferried her for hire. Yes," he pointed, "I was paid."
And he told the tale rehearsing all the Widow did and said.

And he ended, "Sire of Asses--Capon--Owl's Own Uncle--know
I--most impotent of bunglers--I--this ox who cannot row--
I--Jelaludin Muhammed Akbar, Guardian of Mankind--
Bid thee build the hag her bridge and put our mosque from out thy mind."

So 'twas built, and Allah blessed it; and, through earthquake, flood, and sword,
Still the bridge his Viceroy builded throws her arch o'er Akbar's Ford!

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,

The Solitary Reaper

Broken Song

Kasinath the new young singer fills the hall with sound:
The seven notes dance in his throat like seven tame birds.
His voice is a sharp sword slicing and thrusting everywhere,
It darts like lightening - no knowing where it will go when.
He sets deadly traps for himself, then cuts them away:
The courtiers listen in amazement, give frequent gasps of praise.
Only the old king Pratap Ray sits like wood, unmoved.
Haraj Lal is the only singer he likes, all others leave him cold.
From childhood he has spent so long listening to him sing -
Rag Kafi during holi, cloud-songs during the rains,
Songs for Durga at dawn in autumn, songs to bid her farewell -
His heart swelled when he heard them and his eyes swam with tears.
And on days when friends gathered and filled the hall
There were cowherds' songs of Krsna, in raags Bhupali and Multan.

So many nights of wedding-festivity have passed in that royal house:
Servants dressed in red, hundreds of lamps alight:
The bridegroom sitting shyly in his finery and jewels,
Young friends teasing him and whispering in his ear:
Before him, singing raag Sahana, sits Baraj Lal.
The king's heart is full of all those days and songs.
When he hears some other singer, he feels no chord inside,
No sudden magical awakening of memories of the past.
When Pratap Ray watches Kasinath he just sees his wagging head:
Tune after tune after tune, bu none with any echo in the heart.

Kasinath asks for a rest and the singing stops for a space.
Pratap Ray smilingly turns his eyes to Baraj Lal.
He puts his mouth to his ear and says, 'Dear ustad,
Give us a song as songs ought to be, this is no song at all.
It's all tricks and games, like a cat hunting a bird.
We used to hear songs in the old days, today they have no idea.'

Old Baraj Lal, white-haired, white turban on his head,
Bows to the assembled courtiers and slowly takes his seat.
He takes the tanpura in his wasted, heavily veined hand
And with lowered head and closed eyes begins raag Yaman-kalyap.
His quavering voice is swallowed by the enormous hall,
Is like a tiny bird in a storm, unable to fly for all it tries.
Pratap Ray, sitting to the left, encourages him again and again:
'Superb, bravo!' he says in his ear, 'sing out loud.'

The courtiers are inattentive, some whisper amongst themselves,
Some of them yawn, some doze, some go off to their rooms;
Some of them call to servants, 'Bring the bookah, bring some pan.'
Some fan themselves furiously and complain of the heat.
They cannot keep still for a minute, they shuffle or walk about -
The hall was quiet before, but every sort of noise has grown.
The old man's singing is swamped, like a frail boat in a typhoon:
Only his shaky fingering of the tanpura shows it is there.

Music that should rise on its own joy from the depths of the heart
Is crushed by heedless clamour, like a fountain under a stone.
The song and Baraj Lal's feelings go separate ways,
But he sings for all he is worth, to keep up the honour of his king.

One of the verses of the song has somehow slipped from his mind.
He quickly goes back, tries to get it right this time.
Again he forgets, it is lost, he shakes his head at the shame;
He starts the song at the beginning - again he has to stop.
His hand trembles doubly as he prays to his teachers name.
His voice quakes with distress, like a lamp guttering in a breeze.
He abandons the words of the song and tries to salvage the tune,
But suddenly his wide-mouthed singing breaks into loud cries.
The intricate melody goes to the winds, the rhythm is swept away -
Tears snap the thread of the song, cascade like pearls.
In shame he rests his head on the old tanpura in his lap -
He has failed to remember a song: he weeps as he did as a child.
With brimming eyes king Pratap Ray tenderly touches his friend:
'Come, let us go from here,' he says with kindness and love.
They leave that festive hall with its hundreds of blinding lights.
The two old friends go outside, holding each other's hands.

Baraj says with hands clasped, 'Master, our days are gone.
New men have come now, new styles and customs in the world.
The court we kept is deserted - only the two of us are left.
Don't ask anyone to listen to me now, I beg you at your feet, my lord.
The singer along does not make a song, there has to be someone who hears:
One man opens his throat to sing, the other sings in his mind.
Only when waves fall on the shore do they make a harmonious sound;
Only when breezes shake the woods do we hear a rustling in the leaves.
Only from a marriage of two forces does music arise in the world.
Where there is no love, where listeners are dumb, there never can be song.'

A Musical Instrument

What was he doing, the great god Pan,
Down in the reeds by the river?
Spreading ruin and scattering ban,
Splashing and paddling with hoofs of a goat,
And breaking the golden lilies afloat
With the dragon-fly on the river.

He tore out a reed, the great god Pan,
From the deep cool bed of the river:
The limpid water turbidly ran,
And the broken lilies a-dying lay,
And the dragon-fly had fled away,
Ere he brought it out of the river.


High on the shore sat the great god Pan
While turbidly flowed the river;
And hacked and hewed as a great god can,
With his hard bleak steel at the patient reed,
Till there was not a sign of the leaf indeed
To prove it fresh from the river.


He cut it short, did the great god Pan,
(How tall it stood in the river!)
Then drew the pith, like the heart of a man,
Steadily from the outside ring,
And notched the poor dry empty thing
In holes, as he sat by the river.


"This is the way," laughed the great god Pan
(Laughed while he sat by the river),
"The only way, since gods began
To make sweet music, they could succeed."
Then, dropping his mouth to a hole in the reed,
He blew in power by the river.


Sweet, sweet, sweet, O Pan!
Piercing sweet by the river!
Blinding sweet, O great god Pan!
The sun on the hill forgot to die,
And the lilies revived, and the dragon-fly
Came back to dream on the river.


Yet half a beast is the great god Pan,
To laugh as he sits by the river,
Making a poet out of a man:
The true gods sigh for the cost and pain, --
For the reed which grows nevermore again
As a reed with the reeds in the river.
